Welcome to the June 2023 edition of the TOTF newsletter!
Firstly, let’s address the recent train derailment over the Yellowstone River. Although tragic, thank goodness no injuries were reported. As to the fishery itself, the authorities have closed the river downstream from the accident. Since this is about 100 miles downstream from where TOTF guides our guests – there is no effect on our adventures on the Yellowstone.

This month’s section on Things to do in SW Montana – Rodeos!
Post-Runoff Season in Montana
Our rivers have peaked and are dropping daily! We are starting to fish more sections of our rivers that were unfishable a couple of weeks ago.
It has been a bit of a manic Spring season weather-wise here in SW Montana. Current conditions with warm days and relatively cooler nights have a damping effect on the runoff. There is still a significant snow-pack in the mountains as of this writing and water levels are still a bit high, so be careful when wading. Our dam-controlled rivers, tailwaters, stillwaters, and spring creeks are the most consistent as we write this. In terms of fishing, the Madison River is in great shape from YNP to the headwaters of the Missouri near Three Forks, MT. The Missouri River below Hauser Dam and Holter Dam near Helena and Craig, Montana, are fishing very well too. Our still-water fisheries, such as Hebgen Lake, Holter Lake, Canyon Ferry, and Harrison Lake, are fantastic options this time of year. The fisheries in Yellowstone National Park, the Firehole, Gallatin, and some other rivers and streams we prefer not to mention out loud 🙂 are fishing well during post-runoff.
It’s important to note that fishing conditions are very dynamic at this time of year. Weather and water flows are constantly in flux, so check with us as you plan your trip. We can assist you in planning your adventure by providing expert advice on your next adventure’s details click the button below to schedule a quick call with us to help you plan your trip.
Fishing Report
Madison River
The Madison River is the most diverse year-round fishery in Montana and provides a wide range of options for every level of angler. Our trips can cater to the beginner new to fishing, let alone fly fishing, to the seasoned angler looking for a new challenge. On the Madison, we offer drift, walk-wade, or a combination of both, whereas, on a float trip, we occasionally get out of the boat to wade. These wade sections are usually under less pressure than other places accessible to wade anglers. Contact us or schedule a consultation call at your convenience to learn more.
The Upper Madison at this time is fishing great to excellent, with water levels dropping and days getting warmer. Trout are preferring slower water as temperatures are still cooler – especially in the morning. In the warmer late AM, we see hatches of PMDs, Caddis, and Yellow Sallies. Larger Stonefly patterns are a must in your fly box as Salmon Flies are here and are currently between Varney and 8 Mile FAS (fishing access site).
With a full reservoir, we expect excellent conditions through July, at the least on the Upper.
The Lower Madison, only 30 minutes from Bozeman, is fishing exceptionally well with the current conditions and warmer temperatures. Flows are higher than normal, which is great for this spring/fall fishery. The section from Warm Springs to Black’s Ford are seeing hatches of Caddis, PMDs, and a few Yellow Sallies. We expect conditions to be good into July – until we’ll have to compete with the Bikini hatch for places on the water.

PMD’s and Caddis are the name of the game. Need more details? Contact us or schedule a call at your convenience.

Yellowstone River
The Stone has finally dropped to a manageable level (below 11,000 cfs at the Livingston gauging station), and clarity depends on how much rain the upper Lamar River in Yellowstone National Park receives daily. This is the time of year to get on the Yellowstone River for an opportunity at a larger-than-average brown trout (depending on water clarity). The fish have had little to no pressure since pre-runoff in March and April. If you are scheduled to fish with us in the upcoming weeks, and the water conditions are unfavorable, the Madison is always a great backup.
Contact us now or schedule a consultation call at your convenience to schedule a trip. Limited spaces are available.
Hebgen Lake
Fishing is excellent on Hebgen Lake and a great alternative to some rivers more affected during this prolonged runoff season. Hebgen Lake is quite full – which is good for the health of the Madison River this year – and fishing has been great. Dry flies, streamers, and nymphs are all putting fish in the net. Chironomid fishing has been excellent under a strike indicator or an adult on the surface. Beginning to fish for the “gulpers” – site fishing large trout with Callibaties is starting to pick up. Streamer fishing is good as well. With our jet and prop boats, we can easily and quickly move around the lake to find feeding fish and calm coves protected from the wind. If you ever have fished the fall run for the large trout on the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park, these are the same beasts – rainbows and browns averaging 18″ – 20″ in length.

Streamers
- BH (bead head) Wooly Bugger, black or olive – size 8-4
- Balanced Leach, black, olive, or burnt brown – size 10-6
- Near Nuff Crayfish, brown or dirty olive – size 8-4
Holter Lake
If the conditions are good (no wind), the fishing on Holter Lake has been incredible. Fishing a single Chironomid about 24″ under a strike indicator without any weight is the best technique. You will have plenty of opportunities. A balanced leach with a Chironomid dropped-off has also been very effective. Overcast calm days have been best. If the wind picks up, we can use our jet boats to move up the Missouri River to continue fishing.
The weather has been a bit moist and windy, so you can always contact us, and we can help with your trip.
All of our jet boat captains are among the few Coast Guard licensed captains permitted to launch our boats at the private Gates of the Mountain Marina, only 20 minutes north of Helena, Montana.
