Trout On The Fly – December 2025 Newsletter

ICE IS NICE

We’re just one week away from our first ice fishing trip of the year (pending safe ice conditions). We couldn’t be more excited for some winter angling action on some of the most beautiful frozen lakes in Montana.

If you’re out in Montana for the holidays to ski or see family, or are a local looking for a fun way to get out of the house, give us a call or visit the website to learn more. We’re open to last-minute bookings and can accommodate large groups and all ages.

NEW LOOK SITE

You may have noticed that the landing page for our website got a refresh. There are a lot of great new images as well as a streamlined design that makes learning more about where we fish and our booking options easier to find. Check it out and let us know what you think!

The new website ties in nicely with the booking platform we implemented last year, which makes locking down your next trip with us incredibly easy.

Speaking of your next trip, now is a great time to beat the post-Christmas rush and get your 2026 dates set. Trust us, after New Year’s, everyone starts planning their summer trips so if you want to get specific dates or guides and the best lodging, reach out and we’ll get you sorted.

WRAP UP YOUR SHOPPING

While you’re checking out the new web page, toggle over to our shop for some great holiday gift ideas. For that hard-to-buy-for fisherman or woman, you can’t go wrong with our Trout On The Fly hats, which come in an array of styles and colors to suit everyone on your list.

Another must-have gift this season is a comfy, cozy hoodie, and we’ve got a cool one with the TOFT logo that comes in four different colors–get one of each!

If you’re looking for stocking stuffers, we’ve got you covered with our gift cards, koozies, stickers, and Yeti tumblers.

WE ARE HIRING

We are looking for a  seasonal Adventure Director who will play a central role in delivering seamless, high-quality communication during our peak fishing season. This position oversees daily operations, including answering phones, booking trips, managing trip logistics, guest interactions, guide interactions, and lodging logistics. The ideal candidate is an experienced fly angler in our area and an outdoor leader who thrives in a fast-paced, seasonal environment where no two days are the same.

Do you know someone who is a great fit? Please send your resume, cover letter, and references to nate@montanatroutonthefly.com with the subject line: Adventure Director – Seasonal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

GREAT FISH OF 2025

As we look back on 2025, we’re thankful for everyone who came to fish with us. We appreciate all our returning clients as well as those of you who just booked with us for the first time. We’re lucky to call this place home and love to share it with you.

From the Missouri to the Madison and all the spots in between, the 2025 season was filled with amazing moments – here are some of the more memorable fish that made it to the net.

Hope to see you on this list in 2026!

Happy Holiday & Happy New Year!

– Nate & the TOTF team

Buck rainbow caught by longtime client John C. on the Missouri River in April. We did not measure the fish but guessed it to be close to 23″.

Return clients, father and son, landed this larger-than-average brown on the Gallatin River in Yellowstone National Park in July on a wade-fishing trip.

In early October, new TOTF client Arna landed this 23+” brown with guide Matt Hoff on a wade trip in Yellowstone National Park on the Madison River. From a safe distance, they also witnessed a grizzly bear mom and two two-year-old cubs on their hike into their spot.

Return client Jon B. landed the 22″ brown with guided Matt Hoff in Yellowstone National Park on the Madison River in mid-October.

Longtime client Bernie landed the 40″ northern pike unexpectedly on Upper Holter Lake on 3x with a balanced leech about 3′ beneath the strike indicator. Incredible that the fish did not break the tippet with its sharp teeth.
